In Rio de Janeiro

In 2007, the City for the Cultures of Peace established a cooperation agreement with the UNESCO-Prize Holder Yvonne Bezerra de Mello, founder of Projeto UERÊ, a school for street children from Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, offering them education, food, medical care, and shelter. Since 1993, Projeto UERÊ has helped 1020 children obtain an education; the school cares daily for 430 children with severe learning problems and disabilities. These street children are traumatized kids, victims of violence. “Projeto UERÊ re-habilitates them and helps them return to normal school life and curriculums,” writes Yvonne Bezerra de Mello. The City for the Cultures of Peace is in the process of establishing a new education program to help Projeto UERÊ.
