Lecture organized by the City for the Cultures of Peace in cooperation with the Western European Studies Program and the EU Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Friedrich Hamburger, Head of Directorate D – West and Central Africa, the Caribbean and the Overseas Commonwealth Territories of the Development Directorate-General at the European Commission began his career in the Austrian Foreign Service, representing his country in many other states and international organizations. In 1995, he joined the Development Directorate-General at the European Commission. From 1998 to 2000 he was the Director for Relations with all ACP Countries. His publications and lectures focus on European integration, international security, international trade issues, development policy, and science and research cooperation.

Thomas Lesch Schmidt is a physician whose work focuses on the history of medicine; he presented his work on allegedly Jewish genetic diseases at the international symposium on “Forms and Dynamics of Exclusion in Contemporary Societies,” held at UNESCO, Paris 1997. The conference initiated and organized by Prof. Amy Colin in collaboration with Prof. Marie-Claire Hoock-Demarle (Univ. of Paris 7) brought together one hundred speakers from many different countries. Thomas Lesch Schmidt is also a noted composer and recipient of the “Franz Liszt Award for Musical Composition 2004” from the Pro Europa: European Cultural Foundation (Germany). His opera “The Golem in Bayreuth” (1999) was performed by the Burgtheater/Akademietheater in Vienna, Austria. Ulla Berkéwicz, well-known author, actress, and editor, wrote the libretto. Professor Patrick Imbert, holder of the Research Chair at the University of Ottawa, is Canada’s leading Comparative, Canadian, and French literature expert. He is also a specialist on Latin American Studies. His current groundbreaking work focuses on the impact of stereotypes on contemporary society in the Americas and Europe. I. PANORAMICA SUL CICLO DI CONFERENZE E SEMINARI DELLA CCP DEDICATI ALLE CULTURE DELLA PACE

– ASPETTI SOCIO-POLITICI DELLA PACE. Un ciclo di conferenze e tavole rotonde scaturite dai simposi internazionali di Parigi del 1995 e 1997: The Pervasiveness of Politics (Pervasività della politica), Patterns of Exclusion (Forme di esclusione) e Forms and Dynamics of Exclusion in Contemporary Societies (Forme e dinamiche dell’esclusione nelle società contemporanee). Tra i relatori il Professor Robert Castel (EHSS, Francia), Stephen Castles (University of Wollongong, Australia), Stanley Hoffmann (Harvard, USA), Juan J. Linz (Yale, USA), C. L. Pandit (University of Delhi, India), e Lorenza Sebesta (Università di Bologna, Italia). Il ciclo è proseguito negli anni successivi con gli interventi di altri importanti scienziati politici e teorici della cultura tra cui, nel 2002, il Dr. Friedrich Hamburger, all’epoca capo della Direzione generale VIII D della Commissione Europea (Bruxelles, Belgio) per l’Africa occidentale, Africa Centrale, Caraibi, Paesi d’oltremare e territori del Commonwealth, con una conferenza dal titolo “The Contribution of EU Development Policy to Conflict Resolution” (Il contributo della politica di sviluppo della EU alla risoluzione del conflitto) presso l’Università di Pittsburgh; nel 2007, alla Humboldt-Universität di Berlino, il premio Nobel Wole Soyinka (Nigeria/USA) e il Professor Henry L. Gates (Harvard, USA) hanno trattato la lotta al razzismo attraverso l’educazione; e il Professor Alain Goldschläger (Western Ontario University, Canada) che ha parlato di “Universal Conspiracy Theories: An Obstacle to Peace” (Teorie della cospirazione universale: ostacolo alla pace) presso la CCP, Lugano 2012. Ricercatori ospiti per il 2014-2015:

Elke Leonhard, Presidente Onorario della Società Parlamentare Tedesca, Berlino, Germania, lavora sul progetto di ricerca “Wahrheit und Versöhnung” (Verità e riconciliazione) presso la CCP. Nel novembre 2012 ha tenuto a Lugano una prima presentazione del suo progetto di ricerca e una conferenza sugli sforzi compiuti nella Germania contemporanea per superare il passato della DDR. – LETTERATURA E PACE! ciclo scaturito da due conferenze internazionali tenutesi, la prima all’Università di Ottawa, Canada, nel 2003-2004, la seconda in occasione del Forum on the Cultures of Peace al Vecchio Municipio di Francoforte sul Meno, Germania, nel 2004. Il ciclo è proseguito negli anni successivi con conferenze in diverse università americane ed europee. Nel 2010-2012 la CCP ha portato avanti questo ciclo di conferenze con gli interventi del Professor Peter Demetz, Sterling Professor di Germanistica e Letteratura Comparata (Yale University, USA); del Professor Patrick Imbert, Distinguished University Professor (University of Ottawa, Canada) e il Professor Alain Goldschläger, (Western Ontario University, Canada) e di altri importanti relatori. Relatori ospiti per il 2014-2015:

IV. PROGRAMMA DI RICERCA E DI STUDI

GIUSTIZIA GLOBALE? – UN PROGRAMMA PANTHER CO-ORGANIZZATO DALLA CITTÀ PER LE CULTURE DELLA PACE IN COLLABORAZIONE CON IL PROGRAMMA DI STUDI ALL’ESTERO E IL CENTRO DI STUDI GLOBALI DELL’UNIVERSITA DI PITTSBURGH, USA.

Questo programma si focalizza sui concetti divergenti, quando non addirittura incompatibili, di giustizia globale – a livello politico, culturale, filosofico, religioso e legale – trasversale alle culture e a i paesi. Il programma prevede gli interventi di importanti figure politiche e accademiche, e adotta un approcio interdisciplinare destinato ad arricchire le esperienze interculturali degli studenti. La lingua di insegnamento è l’inglese. È ideale per studenti di tutte le facoltà che siano interessati alla giustizia, ai diritti umani e alla pace. Il programma è aperto esclusivamente agli studenti iscritti. Non è aperto al pubblico. Il primo programma si è tenuta presso la Maison Suger/Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, Parigi, Francia, dal 3 al 17 agosto 2014.
