The City of Lugano is an important political, cultural, and economic crossroads. It is also a gateway of peace. It is for this reason that the City for the Cultures of Peace (CCP), following an official invitation from and a long-term contract with the City Council of Lugano, conceptualized and implemented several new CCP programs and projects in and for the benefit of this Ticino metropolis.
Since the start of their Lugano activities with an international conference on “Coexistence and Exclusion in Multicultural Societies” featuring as guest speakers former Ambassador Carla Del Ponte, Professor Peter Demetz (Yale University), Professor Michael Finkenthal (The Johns Hopkins University), and Professor Patrick Imbert (University of Ottawa) in December 2009, the City for the Cultures of Peace and its Institute for Coexistence Studies and Intercultural Mediation in cooperation with the Foundation for the Cultures of Peace organized the new educational event series “Imagine Peace!” with Nobel Prize Laureates Wole Soyinka and Herta Müller and with Israel Prize Laureate Aharon Appelfeld; documentary exhibitions such as “Visages de la Paix,” “Artists for Amnesty,” and the “Wole Soyinka Documentary Exhibition”; public lecture series such as “Religion and Peace!” opened by Israel Prize Laureate Aharon Appelfeld and Professor Azzolino Chiappini, Rector of the Lugano Faculty of Theology, “Socio-political Aspects of Peace” initiated in Lugano by Professor Alain Goldschläger, Western University, Canada, and “Art, Music, and Poetry for Peace.”
Many of these activities are devoted to education and therefore address the youth. “Imagine Peace!” with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka brought together over 600 High-School and University students from many different schools and academic institutions in Lugano and its surroundings.
The public lectures, seminars, exhibitions, and art happenings organized by CCP and its Institute ICSIM on their premises in the former Town Hall of Breganzona promoted the dialogue between the CCP guest speakers from abroad and members of the community in Lugano. Activities were and are organized in cooperation with the CCP-network of regional, national, and international academic institutions, organizations, foundations well as the City Council of Lugano and the Department of Education of the Republic and Canton of Ticino.
