RESEARCH ON TOTALITARISM
Focus IV examines the impact of totalitarisms upon the human psyche and develops new methods of coping with the experience of dictatorship.
CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT:
TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION. DIRECTOR: Dr. ELKE LEONHARD, Honorary President of the German Parliamentary Association (Berlin), former Member of the German Federal Parliament (1990-2005) and Head of the Committee for Culture and Media.
This research project focuses on the analysis of the SED dictatorship, giving special attention to its repressive apparatus. The project’s goal is “Truth and Reconciliation.”
Similar to the analysis of dictatorships in Chile and South Africa, Dr. Elke Leonhard’s project examines the biographies of perpetrators and victims, developing a model for the planned encounters and discussions between perpetrators and victims.
The project’s research object is the GDR: 18 million people were deprived of their freedom during 40 years. The GDR restricted all civic rights from the freedom of the press to the freedom of assembly.
