Beautiful picture Humaneness, respect, and mutual recognition are preconditions of peaceful coexistence. Other key factors in the safeguarding of peace in society are civic responsibility, social engagement, and the building of bridges between heterogeneous peoples despite all differences separating them. These insights shaped UN Declarations and Programs for peace and for “a culture of peace.”

The members of the international research network City for the Cultures of Peace share the conviction that these fundamental preconditions of peace are no givens, but the outcome of both personal and collective work. Peace can only be realized if every person understands its significance and strives to implement the above-mentioned objectives in daily life. Through their multifaceted activities the members of the City for the Cultures of Peace aim at turning such goals into practice, while stressing the diversity of cultures and peace. Their work for peace is in and of itself a process: a road towards “cultures of peace”.
